If you research, as I have, the most popular, unique, and “best” names for dogs, you will be overwhelmed by a bazillion websites claiming to have found them. But I just discovered an almost equal amount of sites with lists of funny dog names. For our convenience, Parade magazine compiled 150 of the most clever and hilarious dog names you’ll find online. Admittedly, some are so cute and witty, and others are downright ridiculous!
Now I would never advocate humiliating your dog with an embarrassing name. But there are quite a few names that would make your pooch quite proud.
Here are some of my favorites
- Bark Twain
- Chewbarka
- Jimmy Chew
- Mary Puppins
- Salvador Dogi
- Sarah Jessica Barker
- Woofgang Puck
- Fluffernutter
- Fyodor Dogstoevsky
What’s in a name?
By the way, because we do rescue and often take in older dogs, we’ve had many. Some we renamed – even the older ones catch on quickly – but for others, we’ve kept their given names. It depends on whether the name has meant something personal to us. For example, “Teagan” was the name of our first English Springer Spaniel. My husband named her after a character in Doctor Who. I named my very first long-haired Chihuahua, “Shahrazad,” during my belly dancing phase (yes that’s how old I am, but, hey, I was in a dance troupe!).
We named our second Springer Spaniel “Sara,” after our hometown, Sarasota. Sadly, she was more seriously ill than we were made aware of when we rescued this old girl. We lost her in just 15 months at about 12 or 13 years old. We then came upon a much younger rescue – not that age has ever been an issue – and we wanted to give her a name that honored our dear departed Sara. It was a baby name book that inspired the name we gave the pup. The book explained the meaning of each name. Turns out that “Sadie” was a derivative of “Sara.” It was perfect.
We’ve had so many fur babies since then, often keeping their more common given names like Mimi, Angelle, Fancy, Lacy, and more. Sometimes, they just fit. My question to you is, what and why have you given your doggies their names? Please leave your comments below!
